Training and knowledge

The airport undertakes project work with schools and pupils, helps prepare them for the world of world with training on how to make job applications, and organised events at the airport provide interesting insights into everything that goes on at the airport.

Dialogue with young people

Düsseldorf Airport is always keen to maintain a dialogue with young people. The airport has for several years been one of the partners of the Initiativkreis Ruhrgebiet project, which invites senior school pupils from the area to visit the airport and meet the management teams. This means they are able to learn lots about economic relationships, the everyday work of an airport manager, the latest developments at the airport and what the airport is like as a place of work.
The airport works with school pupils on projects, supports the preparation for working life with job application training and, with events at the airport, provides interesting insights into all that goes on at the airport.

Intercultural pupil exchange projects

‘For a clever person, travel is the best education.’
Even today this dictum of Goethe has lost nothing of its significance. Getting to know and understand other people and cultures and being able to reflect on one’s own positions and living conditions are qualifications which are of importance both for social coherence and working life.

As a business promoting mobility and travel, as a place where every day several thousand people from the widest variety of countries and cultures come together, and also as an employer providing work to people from the widest variety of countries, Düsseldorf Airport supports intercultural pupil exchange projects in cooperation with the Albert Einstein Grammar School in Kaarst.

School on site
Düsseldorf Airport makes a very special provision to school pupils from the immediate neighbourhood: free visits to the airport, with schools very often using a visit to the airport as a supplement to teaching. For example, if air travel is the current topic in English lessons, pupils can apply and reinforce their understanding of the relevant course content on site, by asking passengers questions in English, for instance.

Practical projects
Düsseldorf Airport regularly supports neighbouring schools by providing practical project work. For example, once a year pupils from Düsseldorf’s Max Planck Grammar School visit the airport to measure noise levels on site. After an introductory lecture on the basic principles of measuring aircraft noise, they proceed to the apron where the pupils take up various positions to measure and document the noise of aircraft taking off and landing for themselves. The results are then evaluated back at school.

Cooperation with schools
For several years Düsseldorf Airport has been a regular cooperative partner of schools in Ratingen and Düsseldorf.
As part of this cooperation the airport also provides job application training. Pupils learn how to put together an application portfolio and avoid common mistakes, what sorts of aptitude tests there are and how to prepare for them, and they have to chance to have a mock interview with staff at the airport human resources department.
In addition pupils can take part in practical exercises, in the airport’s apprentice workshop for example.

Project partnerships
Düsseldorf Airport has established a very special kind of cooperation with the Mataré Grammar School in Büderich where in October 2008 the first school weather station in Meerbusch began to operate. The airport not only paid for the installation, but supported the school with the choice of equipment consisting of the actual weather station, the operating software, a mounting frame and a monitor. The data is published on the school intranet, enabling teaching in physics, geography and IT to have a very practical application.
